have you dry hopped with galaxy before? I am thinking about dry hopping my blonde ale with a little galaxy or maybe a mix of Galaxy and Nelson Sauvign.
Dry hopping with that high AA, is it advisable?
Have you done this? Some say Galaxy leaves a weird aroma when dry hopping, what is your experience?
Great hop to dry hop with. Try a couple oz for 5 days @ room temp in your blonde ale and I think you’ll be pleased. It blends really well with Nelson, too.
Edit - As said, you won’t extract any bitterness from dry hops, so the AA isn’t a concern here. And BTW, one of the Stone ‘Enjoy By’ IPAs used a blend of Galaxy and Nelson and it was a great beer IMO.
Galaxy is a nice dry hop. I wouldn’t worry overmuch about the high AA - you’re not going to be extracting AA at dry hop temps, anyway. Perhaps my favorite new dry hop variety is El Dorado, and it weighs in around 15% AA.
Most of the newer hops popular for dry hopping have high AA. Citra, Simcoe, Mosaic, Equinox, and so on are all >10% AA. Not a problem, as the higher % essential oils these hops have are what we are after.
Galaxy goes well with Citra when dry hopping. It also goes with Mosaic.
Galaxy & Nelson Sauvin are fabulous dry hops. In fact they are both great all round hops.
Both have a very distinctive flavour for sure, but they are generally loved by those who like hops.
I have an IPA I just made that has Galaxy at flameout and dry hop. Turned out fantastic.
Currently drinking my IPA dry hopped with 2 oz each of Galaxy, Nelson, and Cascade. A fantastic combo that I really have been enjoying lately.
Galaxy and Nelson are great together, but Galaxy is still great on its own as well. Go for it.
I made an IPA last year with that combo partly because of how good the Stone (Enjoy By) beer was, and partly to use up some older Cascade hops. It was crazy good. I’d use that blend and quantities again in a heartbeat.
Don’t be discouraged from using a hop late or as a dry addition just because it is high alpha.
I love Chinook as another example of a high-alpha hop that works great late or as a dry hop.
It’s all about the aromatics, not the alpha.
