Free recipe calculators

Do we have one here on AHA? For years I have been bouncing around using these (Tastybrew, BrewToad, Brewgr) and eventually they go down or get bought out and I have to keep looking. I’ve been using Brewgr and now I see it’s being bought by Brewer’s Friend which is a subscription service. I just want to see the recipe, ABV, IBUs, SRM, etc. and go. Is anyone here using a free online, browser-based recipe calculator? Thanks Beerheads.

I use a Brew Log app on my IPhone. It was free with up to a certain number of recipes, then you have to pay for more recipes.

I made one on Excel using basic formulas from Palmer’s book. It gives me all the brew day particulars (pre & post boil volumes and gravities, IBU’s, SRM, ABV) except water/pH adjustments.

I have a lot of recipes saved and on paper so I could wing it for sure but if I’m going to make a beer that I made two years ago and I have new hops at different AA% then it’s nice to be able to plug in the new numbers and get a sense of where I am. I suppose I could use Brewer’s Friend .. one tier is $36/year which is worth it to me but I have never paid for one of these.

Brewtarget is a free MacOS, Windows, Linux platform

Thanks for that. I see there is a brewtarget.org (now defunct) and a brewtarget.beer. I downloaded the windows version and will play with it. Much appreciated.

I am using the old version on my old Mac and like it. I have it set for my system. Will be getting a new Macmini shortly and will try the new version

I think it is good to pay software developers. They have to eat too.

I subscribe to Beersmith.

I use BeerSmith, as well. It’s got a lot baked into it and there are desktop, web, and mobile versions that can all access the same recipes in the cloud.

I hear this .. I AM a software developer. But I have been brewing since 1999 and there have always been free versions out there so I guess I’m a little spoiled. I did download the Beertarget and I will noodle with using Brewer’s Friend.

Brewtarget is open source, there is an option to donate to the cause.

Like many others in this thread, I also am a fan of BeerSmith and Bru’n Water. The software is solid, has never crashed and is reasonably accurate. Been using it for about 10 years.

Is Beersmith browser-based or do you download it and run it locally?

BeerSmithRecipes.com is web based Beersmith. I think it is better than the app and Windows downloaded versions.

However, you can pay a flat fee for the downloaded app and Windows versions. The web version has an annual subscription cost that includes cloud storage. The subscription also adds cloud storage to the app and Windows versions.

Good stuff, thanks guys. I appreciate that. I’ll check all of this out and come to some kind of conclusion. I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving. Cheers Beerheads.

Grainfather has both free web based and app calculators. They are not specific to GF equipment so anyone can use them.

Either, or both.

I have the Windows version and the App for my devices. This way, I can keep my Brew Day stats on my app in my brewery and, using the BeerSmith cloud, I can upload to my Windows version where I do all my recipe creation. Recipe creation, for me, is much easier in the Windows version vs. the App. I have never used the web based version.

I use the Brewer’s Friend app.

I just upgraded my mid-2010 iMac 27 to a new Macmini. I mention this as I can only run the old Brewtarget 2.3. as I can’t get the new one to load due to Apple’s clampdown on unauthorized apps. For me that is actually fine as I was running the 2.3 version on my iMac. I am now at an age where I hate new computers and learning new software.
