Grain Storage Long-Term

Greetings strangers! I hope all is well w. you guys and gals, I’m still on leave from brewing as the newborn hasn’t started driving or gone away to college yet.

I’m curious to know how long IYO do you think un-crushed grain is good for. This is sealed in airtight containers stored indoors. Thanks and cheers.

As long as they are fairly moisture free (not in an overly humid environment) and not stored in a hot room (cooler is better) then they should easily last 1 year or so.  Keep in mind some of the base malt you buy is probably a year old when you get it.  I would think that some roasted malts would store even better.

Best to eat some of that malt first before brewing with it to make sure it has not gone “slack”.  If it still has a good crunch to it, then you should be good to go.

BTW, I bet you will find some time to squeeze a brew day in once you get used to having the baby around.  Your kettle will be calling to you in your dreams…

Years, if kept cool and dry.

Pretty much every birthday (late October) and Christmas I get some base grains for presents. I vacuum seal them and use them sometime in the next year and have never had any issues.

i buy 55# bags every 4-6 months for my base malts. kept in garbage cans in basement around 60F most of the time and stays very fresh during brewing cycle.

Oh hi there Ken, long time no talk!

Welcome back from busy life !

Years as Denny said.  I brewed a lager with 3 year old Best Pils.  It won its class at a comp this August.  So years is my answer.  It was stored in the original bag inside of a Rubbermaid plastic storage bin.  Nothing fancy

I store in 5 gallon food safe buckets with gamma seal lids. I also have them in my basement.

I store mine in a sauna. Not sure if I am doing this right.

Store them crunched and they will mash in situ, lazy way to do it.
