I’m brewing the Gaelic Ale (Highland Brewing) clone recipe from BYO’s 250 classic clone book. I’m having to scale my recipe to a 3 gallon batch for my equipment. Best I figure, they are basing the recipes on a 70% efficiency where as I get around 75%. Essentially I am reducing all amounts using the Brewmate software from 5 gal to 3 gal and then adjusting my base grain to match the intended OG for the recipe based on my all grain efficiency. My problem is, no matter what I do… 5 gallon, 3 gallon, base grain adjustment… it doesn’t matter, I keep getting an SRM of around 15. The recipe says I should be in the 24 range. I made sure all of my lovibond settings match the intended grains but it is still coming in a bit pale. Should I just brew it or am I missing something.

I’m assuming they are using a lower efficiency cause I had to reduce my base grain a bit to get the OG right but this didn’t seem to affect the SRM value. I just feel like I’m missing something. I don’t have this problem when I scale recipes from Brewing Classic Styles but this one is baffling me a bit.
