Hop oils

Anybody have experience using hop oils in your IPAs? I am going for piney with some chinook hop oil, west coast style IPA.

Chinook and cascade as 20.
Distilled chipinook hop oil prior to kegging. The packages says use half or all (1ml) prior to kegging.

Looking for opinions on using half, or just going full bore and using the 1ml.
I too, it out of the package and the vile smells pretty dank. Opinions?

This has always interested me. Where did you get yours?

Lhbs. My shop has another hop oil that’s distilled. But I forget which one. I opened the pouch of chinook and got the “vile” out and was reminded of hop hunters aroma from the get go.

The chinook oil really came through, more citrus than pine and resinous. I’m happy with the final product. Used imperial corporate yeast, which is season. Very clean nice beer. Only 3oz hops and the 1ml of oil. Basically the oil was a substitute for dry hopping and late additions.

Jkirkham, do you have any kind of link you can share, or the name of a manufacturer, or something, to help us find these products? Does LHBS have a website?  I’d sure like to try this.

I know someone else was able to order some other varieties from Glacier Hops.

I also found a site, Hop Tech Homebrewing Supplies, selling a variety of products, including CO2 and iso.  Want to keep researching, just wonder what exactly jkirkham got, as we have a “live” testimonial on that.

Reading the descriptions, I’m guessing the MoreBeer offerings might well be from Glacier.

My friend Adam, who is also on this forum from time to time and runs the shop , tells me he goes through the same supplier that morebeer does. It’s that chinook hop oil though. I told him I’d actually try 2ml in a future batch.
He also told me not to even purge my keg. Which I did after the fact. But I could smell the oils. I/we think i got less pine resin because of the purge. The citrus through is quite clean.
I wanna say his supplier is brew craft.
I’d recommend it over a dry hop if you wanna try it. I had in my head, “this beer is gonna be dank like hop hunter” which it wasn’t. But I’m still very satisfied.

Thanks, I guess I’ll put some of the Chinook on my next MoreBeer order.  I like Chinook.  Hopefully MoreBeer will eventually add more varieties. I was thinking, in my process, I might add it with my finings.  It will get jumped from that keg to a serving keg to carb, so maybe add it there.  As close as possible to the pour.  And I’d be perfectly happy with a tidy, controllable way just to get regular dry hop character, rather than Hop Hunter-ish.  Not that I don’t like that too.

From what I understand it’s very volatile and it’s best to add the oils when you’re basically done with the Brewing, or starting your kegging process.
I brought a growler of this beer to a homebrew camping trip (which I’m at now, posting in my tent, lol). Nothing but positive reviews.
I followed the hop schedule in the beginning of this post, everyone says well balanced, clean, not overtly bitter but the hop aroma is there and good hop flavor is present. 3oz is not a lot of hops for an ipa. I will probably try the eldorado next. I just don’t make many ipas, but, I guess you could throw the oils in whatever if you were aiming to hit a proper style that went with either of the oils.
