How Do All, Greetings from Lancashire, UK

How Do All ,

I’m a UK based brewer and brewing historian who also blogs and writes about old beers and brewing ; I’m looking for assistance in tracing ; And accessing remotely Pre 1919 US brewing production records .

Any assistance in tracing brewing records would be appreciated and duly credited in writings and blogposts.

Cheers :clinking_beer_mugs:

There might be something in the brewing archives at Oregon State University. Probably a lot about hop growing history, too.

What about Maureen Ogle’s “Ambitious Brew” for some leads.

I suspect that the records of most of the smaller breweries that went out of business during prohibition are just lost to the sands of time.

But I’d love to be proven wrong!

Most states have some variant of a board that regulates alcoholic beverage production and sale. (This is Alabama’s.) They might have leads on where surviving archives might exist.

Hi Edd, a librarian at one of the larger university brewing archives could be invaluable in helping you shape your journey in finding what you’re looking for, scoping your question, etc.–are you looking for individual breweries, data in the aggregate, and so on. I see that the University of Oregon, as suggested by Denny, has a librarian listed on this page.

I would add that Maureen Ogle, the author of Ambitious Brew, is active on social media and in my experience is very approachable.

The trickier part will be finding online primary sources. There is so much print archival material that has yet to be processed. But knowing that sources exist, and where they are, is at least a big part of it.

Hello there Edd and welcome to the AHA Forum. The Brewers Association helped the Smithsonian start the Brewing History Initiative for serveral years. Although the curator is no longer comissioned they do have archives that were gathered via the National Museum of American History. Here is a link to the original project. Here is their contact page information. Cheers and happy research. Julia
