I will be getting about 5 gallons of wort from my club’s upcoming wort share event. Should be around 1.054 and I’d like to add a couple points to the OG. Can I just add DME/LME/honey/candi etc. straight to the wort? or should I heat up the wort and dissolve it? I’m concerned about sanitation if I do that.
Thanks
I’d heat it up a bit to help it dissolve. Can’t see any sanitation worries. Is the wort already boiled when you get it?
Yes, completely boiled and ready to ferment.
Also, I would draw off enough wort to dissolve the DME / whatever and heat only that. If the wort is already cool, there’s no point in reheating the entire batch.
Maybe that was already your plan.
When you say a couple do you mean 2, or 4, or 6 Orr 10?
Because if you mean 2 or 3 there is not really going to be a perceived difference between 1.054 and say 1.057.
I over and undershoot by a couple of points quite a bit due to boil losses being greater or less than estimated and I can’t tell a difference and that is at gravities in the high 30s to low 40s
I’m looking to use a Belgian strong ale yeast, so I would likely want my OG to be 1.060 or higher. I’ll dial in the amount to add once I get the original wort and check its gravity.
Thanks for the good ideas from everyone.
