Hello, I am new to the forums and new to brewing. I started my first kit beer yesterday and I have been poking around learning what I can. I was curious how many ladies are active brewers and forum contributors. I don’t need official stats just wondering because I see a few female names and the AHA ad I saw in a magazine was nice enough to include men and women.
In my own house I am the beer drinker, my guy likes cider but never got into beer. We can agree on ciders and want to experiment with mead once I get a handle on the process.
There are more getting involved with time. There are many female BJCP judges. There are 5 females on the AHA Governing Committee, and that is a new high number. The chair of the Governing Committee is now a female.
My wife brews with me, and while not a BJCP judge, she does steward and has been a head steward several times.

Between you and me, I like her tastes in beer better While I don’t know too many woman brewers, I do find that my female friends are more likely to be into flavorful beers like IPAs and sours than their male counterparts. I think that might be because men tend to be groomed on mass-market lagers at a young age, while women are more likely to be approaching beer with a more open mind and unbiased palate.
As far as meads go, definitely do some reading and ask some questions here, but I highly recommend just diving right in with some smaller batches. It takes a little while to get your mead pipeline started up, so the sooner you start the better.
Welcome. My girlfriend had been making mead for about 12 years before I met her and she bought me my first kit as a valentine’s day present along with a few books and hops rhizomes. Now I make the beer and we make the mead together, which means I lift a lot of pots of hot water, buckets of honey, and full carboys and do what she says. Is that a boxer?
Pete, my boyfriend is the one who bought me a beer book and started this adventure. He also does my heavy lifting on brew day.
Yes that is Duke, my 3 legged 8 year old fawn boxer. His ear is doing a yoda thing after a nap.
When I was young I thought I didn’t like beer because I couldn’t stand the canned light beer my dad and my friends were drinking, gradually my taste got expanded and eventually I was introduced to regional and craft beers. Turns out I was just a beer snob, but since I am a coffee snob and a foodie it is not really a surprise. When I experiment with anything edible I have learned quality, freshness and the pride of crafting it yourself go a very long way.
We have a six year old fawn boxer named bruno. The ear thing in the picture is what made me not sure. Bruno only likes dark, sweet beers in doggy moderation ( licked from our hands). It sounds like we share similar snobberies.
I like Bruno’s taste in beer, I recently fell in love with a vanilla java porter myself.
DarkSide, best suggestion I can make is a craft beer sampling event. Some of the bigger events are attracting a lot of variety. I had my firstirst crispen and angry orchard experience at hockey town brew haha which was put on by the Detroit red wings (right before angry orchard was available everywhere). There were also food trucks and a behind the scenes arena tour so the appeal was broader than just beer. But it gave me a chance to sample a lot of things I wanted to test out. You can direct her to styles that may have more appeal based on other stuff she likes.
Heck our local art fair had a craft beer tasting this year, but there were 6 brands and each had one or two varieties (that Java porter was one of them though).
I’m not sure if you would be interested… but I noticed you mentioned some ‘local’ things to me in your post… My girlfriend is a member of the Detroit Draft Divas which is a women’s craft beer appreciation group. They are not all brewers but they do participate in some of the local brewing events like Rat Fest etc… At any rate figured I would give you their info:
I think my club is a little unique because we have a lot of participation from couples and usually both brew. I’d say ~75% of folks at our meetings are couples. I didn’t think anything of it until I saw pictures of other clubs that were definitely guy-fests. :-\
Since you are new and have a dog, beware that hops are toxic to dogs. Nothing to panic about, just be sure to dispose of your hops after the boil and don’t let him get to them. They can kill a dog. If you dump them in a compost pile the dog might be attracted by the sugars from the boil. I’ve not seen a dog interested in fresh hops.
