Lagers Again

I’m just about to get a new lager fridge, to replace my old one that burned out a year and a half ago. Pretty excited about it ! So I’m gonna brew a BoPils to break the new one in, one of my favorite styles. My question is about the floor malted Weyermann BoPils malt. I used the standard Weyermann BoPils malt numerous times, but never the floor malted. Have you used it, and what were your impressions ?  I’ve heard mostly great things, but I either heard or read a report or two where the brewers felt that there were clarity issues with it. Any help is appreciated.

I have always used the standard bohemian pils malt. From what I have heard, a protein rest will help with the clarity.

Yeah, love the standard. I’m assuming that is a possible issue with the floor malted - I understand it’s a little more under modified than the standard, so a protein rest would be pretty much mandatory, if I’m correct. I had great results with the standard, so there’s no sacrifice to use it.

Jon

I used the floor malted bo Pils on 2 Czech Pils and a Golden Bock/Maibock.

I had no clarity problems whatsoever, dropped to nearly filtered bright.  The maibock took a bit longer to drop clear, but then it too was crystal clear.

The first CP I made with all floor malted and a little carafoam.  the second was otherwise identical but i split the base malt 50:50 with regular old weyermann.  I felt the second one was better in malt flavor and aroma, but that’s just my opinion.

I like the floor malted and would buy it again, i just won’t be heartbroken if I can’t get it.

Good info, thanks Paul !

Ask for a lot analysis and you’ll know for sure.

I’ve used it several times and never had any clarity issues whatesoever.

Cool, thanks !

I am actually blending 50-50 floor malted and regular BoPils malt in my Pilsner.
I am not 100% positive it it has any flavor impact thou.
Blending base malt is a good thing to my opinion.

Yep, I like to blend base malts, too. Thanks for the info, Leos !

I’ve been really happy with my lagers this year. Now, I have to try the floor malted Pils…this thread has perked up my curiousity and I need some tasty lagers for summer.

Same here. I want to hit it hard and get some lagers built up for summer. Been too damn long !
