maiden voyage white labs pure pitch

using WLP001 pure pitch today for first time. as instructed, one pouch is supposed to be enough to pitch directly into wort with OG of 1.070 or lower. my APA is 1.050 OG and the yeast pouch was produced June 28th.

Throwing caution to the wind and following white labs guidance- no starter!

i will  follow up with results.

Is the yeast count in “pure pitch” larger than the one in White Lab vials?

Yes but that’s just part it. Read this:

What is the cell count per pouch?

So much marketing BS…

Interesting to see them jumping on the “pouch” bandwagon ala Wyeast.

all in a day of exbeerimentation!. if it turns out to taste as good as the batch i made with a starter, or there are off tastes that’s really all i’m looking for. proof will be in the finished product, so until then…

They are a bit different. The yeast is grown in a massive pouch and the pouch is subdivided into little pouches. They say it is more sanitary compared to packaging separately.

Interesting as I have never had any issues with sanitation from the Wyeast packs.  But hey, when my LHBS gets some of the new WL pouches in, I am sure I will pick 'em up!

Video at the top of the page from when they first launched for commercial use a while back.

Marketing BS, yes. But in my region Wyeast is very hard to get except online. White Labs is the only game in town. The new pouch plus the east coast production facility are exciting for me.

good news it was off and running at about +12 hours. has about an inch of thick krausen this morning.

Price?

same as vials. depending on LHBS…$6-$8

WL has a credibility problem. Growing yeast in a pouch doesn’t help that.

Am I missing something?

Maybe the trois blend issue with the Saccharomyces?

+1

I thought of that after I typed the question. Must be it.

Damn, my LHBS is more like $12 for yeast.

These look pretty convenient, thanks for posting the info.
