Missed my OG...Gunky Sample?

Took my OG reading after chilling my Belgian Wit down,  Beer Smith had my Est OG at 1.055 and I was around 1.040.

I forgot to take my sample initially, so I tried to take a sample from the trub/hop gunk that I left in the kettle.  I was able to leave most of the hops out but I got a lot of trub.  I was curious, is that going to make the hydrometer reading less accurate?

Why not pull a sample off of the fermenter now before it gets going?

I got no idea how I didn’t think of that, it is already going though.

I feel kinda dumb now.  I’ll know for next time now.  ;D

I have squeezed out my whole leaf hops 3 times now and gotten the exact reading from my wort FWIW. It is all liquid though.

.

All the gunk shouldn’t actually make a difference.  But just for the hell of it pull a sample now and take a reading.  It’ll give you another data point anyway.  If it’s 1.050 now, for example, you’ll know that you’re earlier reading was off.  If it’s 1.035 or so then it was probably right.

I get low efficiencies when I brew witbiers.

I used to also, using raw wheat, then I switched to flaked wheat and it got more normal.
