Old Brewing Photo

I came across this picture in a book of historic photos of Los Angeles (you can click the photo to see a much larger version).

A horse-drawn wagon outside the Eastside Brewery, Los Angeles. c. 1902.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing!

I love history. And that is a great photo too.

What is he doing with the horse? Broom, dust?

Heck, I remember my grandfather farming with draft horses, and don’t have a clue as to what is going on.

Treating for pests?

I remember as a kid, some people we knew had a donkey and would give us kids rides. If you went up to that donkey and gave it a good slap, clouds of dust went up just like that! My guess is that  those horses really would get dusty on the old unpaved streets, and it would be very bad advertising to make your deliveries with a team that was surrounded in a filthy cloud! So yeah, dusting them, just like grandma used to take out the rugs and beat them!

If you like old brewing photos check out this coffee table book

Don’t let the front cover fool you, the photos inside are phenomenal and it is a great read too (although the dimensions make it awkward for bed time reading).

And for $1.99??? Steal!

Thanks, looks cool! There weren’t any offers that cheap, but I just ordered (still <$10 so why not?) I love this sort of book. Can’t wait.

Cool! I think you will really enjoy it. I found the information to be very interesting too.

Spent the morning brewing, and this book just arrived. Looks like the perfect day indoors in a snowstorm is playing out! Thanks for the recommendation, it does look like I’ll like it.

I ordered the book as well. Looking forward to it.

BTW… congrats! you’ve come a long way Kieth:

Zymurgy Magazine named Yellowhammer Brewing’s Rebellion and Folklore Brewing & Meadery’s Shadowcaster Porter the top brews you can buy in Alabama. The ranking was featured last week on Business Insider.

Zymurgy developed the list after asking AHA members to cast votes for the best beers in the country. Using that data, Zymurgy came up with the top 10 beers in the U.S. and the best beers by state.

Awesome! Congrats, Keith.
