Portland, Oregon

Hey everyone, I’m planning on visiting Portland in June, and want to know the best breweries to visit. Not so much worried about the food, just looking for great/different brews. Chances are I won’t be back for a long time, if ever, so I want to make it count.

Breakside and Gigantic.

Not a brewery, but the taproom at Bellmont Station had a great selection. You could sample many breweries beer’s and not leave your seat.

Sadly The Commons is no more. Another vote for Breakside.

If you can get around, 60 miles east on I84 is Hood River. Way worth the get away. pFreim in Hood River, Logsdon has a barrel room in HR, Full Sail is cool for a Macro Craft. Across the river in White Salmon is Everybody’s and they are excellent!

I could see what I would want to see in Portland in an hour, but could spend 3 days easy in Hood River/White Salmon area.

Another vote for Breakside.  The food there is good too.

i agree with your comments on Hood River. the view of Mt. Hood from Everybody’s patio is captivating on a sunny day.

We often don’t get beyond a pizza and beer, or two, at Double Mountain Brewing in Hood River before we have to punch off to other parts of Oregon.

I dig Double Mountain Hop Lava sometimes, and they are a cool bunch, but their Kolsh really turned me off to them

Well, I seldom get a Kölsch in the US. Only slightly more in Germany. So I stuck with th3 Pale Ale or IPA. Pizzas were really good.

What about Cascade Barrel House?  When I was there about four years ago I thought it was great, and I’m not the biggest fan of sours.  Hair of the Dog?  That was one of my favorites.

I would agree with the earlier post on Pfriem.  We spent a night in Hood River and really enjoyed the area and the beer.

I’ve not been to Cascade’s actual location but I’ve had a good bit of their beer and it’s all pretty great, although if you don’t like sours it might not be for you.  They do make some non-sours, but I think at the barrel house they highlight the sours.  Hair of the Dog is always worth the trip.

For the OP, if you’re coming in June I assume you’re coming for HomebrewCon? They often do bus trips in the days leading up to the Con if you can get here early, I bet there will be a bus out to Hood River, and then there will probably be a Portland Metro bus that will hit some of the highlights.  Also, since they provide transport you don’t have to know where to go and you can imbibe safely.  I don’t think these trips have been announced yet, but I can almost guarantee they’ll happen.  Even without HomebrewCon we have a couple of different bus tour type places, the most popular being the Beervana Tours.  Again, they take you around in a bus so they know where to go and also you don’t have to worry about drinking and driving.

Have fun!

Oh, yeah, Hair of the Dog for sure.  And pFriem is definitely worth the drive.

To piggyback on the thread. Looking for main conference area not to miss places. Doesn’t have to be breweries, but need to be beer related. Hoping to organize a crawl of sorts. TIA

On the East side of Downtown Portland there are a number of breweries.  It makes for a wonderful walking tour on a decent day.  If you don’t already have one, get an app like Untappd which has a map of breweries around you and have fun!

Or Brew Guru for possible member deals.

I don’t mean to derail the thread but I’ve been wholly unimpressed with Brew Guru.  Maybe it has developed since I had it on my phone.  I deleted it because it was not up to date by any standard in terms of brewery info, and provided no other useful (to me) feature.

I really liked Beer O’Clock, cozy seating, good people, sometimes free donuts.

Ok, I repent.  I just rechecked Brew Guru.  It has a more up to date map of breweries than does Untappd.  I’ll keep it on my phone.

I was going to say that it has improved markedly. I find that its very useful for finding deals at breweries and tap rooms. Sometimes those deals are for food, beverage, or merchandise.

The other thing that is very useful is that there are listings of good recipes on the app. So you’ll always have something handy to guide you when you find yourself at the homebrew shop and decide that you want to brew something.
