Portland search

Spending a wonderful four days in this beautiful state.  Haven’t had a chance to visit local breweries in Portland yet but wondering if anyone has recommendations on some hidden gems I should try? I know all about the big boy deschuates, I’m talking about the little guy who you have to know a guy, who was cousins with the guy who was an old college roommate.  Okay seriously, had base camp and bearlic on my radar, any others you think are a must try?

Get an app like Untappd.  It has a map feature that can tell you the breweries around you.  A year or so ago my wife and I were staying in downtown Portland.  I spent one day of easy walking and hit 5 or 6 breweries.  They are all on the East side of the river.  I didn’t hit any that were disappointing.

Commons, Cascade, Green Dragon (multitap along with the small Rogue brewery there) are all a short stroll. Hair of the Dog is just to the west from those by the river.

Breakside is a little out of the way, but has great beer. As already mentioned Cascade and The Commons shouldn’t be missed - they are across the street from each other.

And Breakside…definitely Breakside.

In case you missed it, Cascade = Cascade Barrel House.  If you like sours, this is a MUST for anyone coming to Portland.

If you’re in the Cascade/Commons/Green Dragon area you might as well hit Belmont Station. It’s not a brewery but an excellent bar/bottle shop.

Oh yes, and not far from there is the Horsebrass Pub.

I would second both Cascade and Hair of the Dog.

Breakside. Up towards there is mcmenamins Kennedy school. Not great beer but one of the coolest bars I’ve ever been too. Other than that, Horse Brass, and Apex. 50 beers on tap and most of them are fantastic!

I like McMennamins as well.  We have stayed at four, but like the Kennedy school best.
Ecliptic Brewing had very good beers.  They are across the river - you’d probably need a car.

edited to correct the brewery name

Hair of the Dog has good beer, the mac and cheese was horrible.
