prefered fining agent

just tried gelatin to clear my beer in the keg. used 1 teaspon for 5 gallons, heated to 155F than poured into 38F beer. swirled and let it cold condition for 2-weeks. cant say im happy with results. anyway, what does the forum prefer and what are the best results achieved for giving a clear beer.

I use Whirfloc in every beer.  Have had great results.

I use Irish moss the boil for all my beers. I used to use polycar in the secondary and while it works great for clarification, I don’t like that it sticks to the inside of the carboy and is a pain to get out. Just rinsing won’t do it.

I’ve always used gelatin.  I pour one whole pack of knox into water, let it bloom, heat it, stir it, let it cool and pour it into the carboy (5 gallons).

I have to believe a whole pack is more than one teaspoon.

I’ve found it to be effective.  I always forget the Irish moss.

time.
i do use supermoss as a s.o.p., but just letting beer sit - bottle or keg- is a great clarifier.

i used to use gelatin, now i use irish moss (when i remember).  otherwise, time is the great (read as: cheap) clarifier.

+3 Just about the easiest and most cost effective approach. You can mash the tablets between two spoons and add 5-10 minutes before flameout.

Whirfloc (1/2 tablet for 6 gal, added at 15 min) and Biofine Clear (1 mL/gal in the bright or keg).

Time. I used to use whirlfloc all the time until I did a side by side in a 1 gallon batch. The beers were just as clear after 2 weeks, but the whirlfloc trub was a lot fluffier and I ended up getting 1 less beer from the whirlfloc batch. Now I just go au natural. By the end of bottle conditioning my beers are plenty clear for my purposes.

I use irish moss and get relatively clear beer, especially after the bottles sit in the fridge for a few days before drinking. I use gelatin as part of the process of stabilizing brett/sour beers to blend with clean beers but I’ve never used it just to clear beer.

I use Whirlfloc when I remember to put it in.  I use gelatin for lighter beers that have stubborn flocculation issues.

If I fine with gelatin in a corny, can I serve clear beer from the corny or should I rack to another corny for serving?  Got a beer than needs some clearing, in the meantime I’m trying to clarify by cooling outdoors in Chicago.

If the keg won’t be moving, you can serve out of the same one. If you plan on moving it, you’ll kick up the sediment, so transfer to a clean keg first.

Thanks Mark

That’s what I was going to say.  I do this often in the keg.

I just started using whirl-floc, and it works pretty good for me.
I have only used issenglass a couple of times , and I was really impressed with it, I would use it more often if my local store sold it. If you haven’t tried it and can get your hands on some I’d say give a try.
Usually I do the geletin thing.

Whirlfloc in the boil, then most beers clear very well with a little time in the keg.  Like others, I’ll transfer to another keg if the beer is going to travel.
