I just heard that my beer taste salty.
I am aware of sour, plasticky, green apple, corn… Taste descriptors.
I am not sure about that my beer left a salty aftertaste.
Anybody can help?
The only time my beer has ever tasted salty is when I’ve used that useless pH stabilizer powder. Otherwise, I’m not sure what could be causing it. Do you make a lot of mineral additions to your water?
Serve it over buttered pop corn? :P
Seriously, do you add any minerals to your water? I was adding gypsum to my mash and stopped because I got some mineral character I didn’t care for (even though I thought I needed it w/ my water profile). Cut it out and it was gone.
Just a stab.
Leos, how many salty comments have you had? Is it possible that the person who said that is just wrong?
Could be that sour is mistaken for salty. Or it could be a gose.
Who was the souce of this claim and/or was there more than one claim?
A salty taste in water is usually due to the presence of naturally occurring sodium, magnesium, and/or potassium, each of which can be confirmed through a water test.
This was first ever claim.
I adjust my water 60grams of calcium chloride and calcium sulfide (gypsum) for 180 gallons of finished wort.
I put it into the mash only.
Would Saaz be precived as salty?
My dad, who is not a beer drinker, decided to try some of my IIPA a while back. He described it as salty. Nobody else thought that and I decided that his limited exposure turned a pound of hops into “salty” in his mind.
Did you have a lb of sugar in your recipe and use salt by mistake? Did they pour the beer into a salty glass?
Does it taste salty to you?
I wouldn’t worry about it. It seems more likely that this person has a brain injury and thinks beer tastes salty than that saaz would be perceived as salty.
It is Bo Pils. No sugar added at all
So far we sold 52 BBL (1612 Gallons) of beer (in 4 months) and this is first negative feedback.
May be that is why I am so worked up about it.
All other feedbacks are positive.
Thank you guys for help.
Well, in that case, I wouldn’t get too worked up about it. You will get negative feedback from time to time. especially from people who don;t know what the hell they are talking about. I was talking to a guy the other day who said he “didn’t like any of the local beers”. I asked him if he had had my IPA? No. My Belgian White? No. My Alt? … maybe but not sure. WTF? The guy had never had ANY of my beers. Whatever dude. Go back to your Bud Light.
so you are running 12895 to 1 positive to negative in pints. pretty damn good. I know though it’s the one negative that nags at you.
So you didnt do anything to convince/encourage/convert him?!
I invited him to my brewery, if he shows up that should be enough to convince/encourage/convert him. Assuming he likes my beer. I also shouldn’t accuse the guy of drinking Bud Light. He was buying a double wide of Sutter Home at the time. :
I know where he’s coming from. I always try and order local beer on tap from a bar, but there have been times that I’ve quickly switched to bottles or even BMC.
So, are you saying my beer is crap, and you know that for sure?
Where did that come from. I don’t know you or anything about your beer.
I don’t know, seems like you are making assumptions … or trolling again.
I make a general statement about drinking some bad beer and you assume that I’m referring to you?
that was a general statement, eh? It wasn’t pointed at all? Wow. I guess I just misinterpreted it. :
