scale for grain

Any recommendations for a decent grain scale?

I’ve used this one for grains and DME for starter wort for more than 5 years with good results.

Any good digital kitchen scale will do fine as long as you don’t care about weighing all your grain in one go – they usually max out at 11 lb/5 kg, and once you tare your bucket, that’s under 10 lb of remaining capacity.  But I just use my kitchen scale and a 2 gallon paint mixing bucket and weigh my grain in two or more lots, dumping each into the mill hopper as I go, so I don’t have a redundant piece of equipment that just gets used on brew day.  (If you don’t have use for a general purpose kitchen scale, ignore this post.  I’m sure somebody can recommend a good high capacity scale.)

Thanks. I have one similar to that but I’m hoping to find something bigger that can accommodate a big bowl or something large for the grain.

Well I guess it’s easy to find things if you actually look…

This guy has 440 lb capacity

That looks like it could be overkill, and has a minimum readable weight of 6 oz, which makes me wonder what the resolution is… but it has one feature in common with my kitchen scale I’d really recommend looking for:  the display/keypad can be moved out via cable.  This makes sure a big bowl or bucket won’t eclipse it.  I don’t have a link because it’s one of the rare items I didn’t buy online…

Thanks! Looks like postal scales is where it’s at.

I have a small scale for hops and water treatment and another kitchen scale that has a limit of 3 lbs. The issue isn’t the capacity as much as it is the size.

That does look nice as far as design, capacity and resolution go, but does it have a tare function?  I can’t tell.  That would be a must for me, because I hate doing avoidable math.

Good question. I assume the “0.0” button is for the tare function.

I use the ultraship ultra 55. You can get it through morebeer!, and it can weight lbs for grain, ounces for hops, and grams for yeast. That covers everything I need. I’ve checked its accuracy with all and am pleased with the results.

Thanks. I went with something similar to this for half the price.

What?

I’m a sucker for price and good reviews. Code for cheap and lazy…

Wait, just swiping right on Prime is cheap and lazy?  I thought it was wise and efficient…

I have that scale also. It works well, especially for the price.

That’s great! Money saved on a grain scale can be money spent on grain! Nice find.

I use a Rapala fish scale for bulk grains and a common digital kitchen scale for hops and small amounts of specialty grains.

Me too - it gets the job done.

I have used kitchen scales for hops but I prefer a postal scale for grains.
