I’m attaching 2 snaps of the recipe. My question: Will 2-Row (I’ve never brewed with it before) have the same ability for conversion as, say Golden Promise, or Weyermann Pilsner, based on my grain bill?
I would say Yes. Golden Promise And Wyermann Pilsner are both 2row and looking at your grain bill your Avangard 2row malt will convert the flaked corn at the percentages you are using
Thanks. Some day I’m gonna get the TRUE grit as regards 2-Row vs Pils vs…
Pils is 2 row that is killed to a very light color (maybe 1.2L). What most people refer to as 2 row is properly called pale malt and is killed just a tiny bit darker (maybe 1.5-2L). Golden Promise is a variety of barley. It can be be kilned to any color, but is usually in the pale ale malt range of 2-3L. Diastolic power, which determines conversion, is close enough for all 3 that they pretty much convert equally well.
Adding to the excellent conversation, all three have a similar DP range and are designed to work with adjuncts. My professor told me to taste every ingredient (except hops). If you chew a dozen kernels of each you taste the differences, however subtle, and can sense how they will perform in your recipe. Happy brewing
Tasting the ingredients? Of course! When I was shopping for “Chocolate Malts”, I learned that one man’s Chocolate is another man’s Decaf Instant Espresso.
