I made these bars with some spent grain from last weekend’s wheat beer. Looks like birdseed but tastes fantastic!
recipe?
Would you eat this instead of trail mix on a hike or instead of a clif bar on a century ride?
2 cups spent grain
2 cups rolled oats
1 cup pecans chopped
1 cup peanuts chopped - dry roasted, no salt
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 tablespoon butter
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon maple syrup
Heat oven to 175 and spread the wet grains out in a thin layer on a cookie sheet. Bake grains for 2 - 2.5 hours, turning over about every 30 min to thoroughly dry them out. When dried add oats, pecans and peanuts and spread out on cookie sheet. Raise oven to 350 and roast all together for 30 min. Add butter, peanut butter, honey and maple syrup to small sauce pan and bring to a boil. Boil for 5 min. stirring frequently. When done roasting dry ingredients to bowl and top with wet. Mix thoroughly. Line cookie sheet with parchment or wax paper and spread mixture out evenly. Allow to cool for at least 8 hours at room temp and then cut into desired sizes.
Nice! Thanks for the recipe.
nom!
I think I’ll throw in some spent grains into the granola bars I make every week. Thanks!
Thanks for posting this recipe! It sounds fantastic! I’ll be trying it on my next brew day.
I just ate the last of a batch of spent grain & homebrew chocolate chip cookies. They do taste great, but every time I make them I swear it’s the last time. I just hate getting all those grain hulls stuck in my teeth.
Dose of daily fiber too. Will have to try this.
Just saw this. Other than the novelty of eating spent grain is there any nutritional value? Just curious.
Well the spent grains account for less than 1/3 of the recipe so… yes.
don’t underestimate the value of indigestible fiber. it slows the body’s absorption of sugars and helps regulate blood sugar levels.
Keeps you full longer as well. That’s why oatmeal is such great breakfast choice.
