I have a 10 gallon round cooler/mash tun and am considering getting rid of the false bottom in hopes of getting higher efficiency. I continually have efficiency issues and am running out of ideas. Thought this might help…
I just bought a cheaper bag on Amazon. Don’t have a link, but it was 2’ by 3’. Definitely bigger than I need for my 5 gallon cooler. Not sure if it’s big enough for 10. It was something like $15. Haven’t used it yet.
When removing my false bottom and using one of these bags with batch sparge, will my dead space effectively be zero? I need to modify my equipment profile in beersmith and not sure what would be a good starting point until I can get it dialed in.
Keep in mind that a water test won’t be 100% accurate as the grain will displace some water. The difference won’t be a lot, but could reduce your dead space by half.
Suggest you check Walmart in whatever section has very fine mesh bags ladies use to keep their stuff together in the washing machine. I’ve been using them you a while…I have one that may hold 5 lbs of grain when soaked. I use a smaller one for 5 gal batches, always good results. Steve533
Speaking of Walmart… If you have a sewing machine and a free afternoon you could buy a sheer polyester curtain panel for like 2 bucks and have plenty of material for your grain bag and some hop bags. I like the teardrop shape for round vessels.
