Feel in love with Elijah Gray bourbon, while camping in the mountains in Idaho. So, here I am in Ohio, and walk into the state store. I looked everywhere for this lovely fire nectar from the gods, but found none. So, I ask the dude, and he looks at me like I have 2 heads. Never heard of the stuff! Man am I bummed. So, I settled on a bottle of Red Stag, and (flame suit on) LOVE IT!!
Look for random, meaningless post in the next few hours… ;D
For a moderate priced bourbon, I’ve been liking Ezra B 12 yo single barrel lately. When I want to spend a little more, Blantons has recently been hitting the spot.
I like W.L. Weller for a moderate price bourbon. Runs around 14.99 a bottle which is modest. I liked Elijah Craig too as I recall. Come to think of it, once past a certain pricepoint below which they tend to be harsh firewater, or just kind of bland, I like most bourbons!
By law it must be aged at least two years in fresh charred barrels which are then sold to age some other type of whiskey (Scotch commonly). Over 1/2 of the grain base has to be corn.
Bourbons tend to be younger and have a ton of vanilla, smoke (campfire not peat like Scotch) and spicy notes due to single use barrels and full body sweetness from the corn base. Even good bourbon tends to be a little more “raw” than other types of whiskey in my opinion which is what makes it so good. I think a little bit of rye can balance out the sweetness with a nice dryness and spiciness but a little can go a long way if it’s not what you are looking for.
