The Impact of Age: Hops | exBEERiment Results!

Agreed - smarter guys here who really aren’t out to prove their worth - just to advance the discussion a few points and to ultimately say “try it for yourself and see what works best”.  The key is that each of them is brewing and not just spewing!

I don’t totally disagree, though I think the issue would be bigger had the beers been reliably distinguishable.

To clarify, the biggest reason I chose to perform separate mashes is that it makes staggering the batches easier-- when I split a single batch of wort pre-boil, I’m forced to let one sit (covered) for ~20 minutes so that the boils don’t finish at the exact same time. This arguably introduces an extraneous variable, one that I personally thought might be more likely to impact the results than dual mashes, especially since I have 2 sets of the same exact equipment (very consistent).

I can’t express how appreciative I am of all the suggestions, I’ll be sure to consider more strongly splitting the sweet wort for future boil xBmts!

+eleven billionty!  I certainly don’t mean to imply that this, or any other experiment Marshall does, has no value or validity.  Like I said, I think that any difference will be very minor in this regard.  It’s kinda like Mark pointing out the best practices for yeast while I firmly say “Why?  My way has always worked fine”.  It’s a theoretical difference that may have little bearing on reality.

And not just on the internet.  Brewing books are very much like that, too.  Like I said in the article I wrote for Marshall, too many authors simply parrot the conventional wisdom without trying things for themselves.  Just because it’s in a book doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true.

+1. When I was getting into brewing, I was buying books left and right trying to learn all I could. In the end I ended up with a lot to unlearn, which has been compounded by expensive equipment/procedures I’d committed to then.

Denny I just read your article and agree with every word. Where’s the thumbs up icon?

Also liked the batch sparge article. Have you tried combining no sparge brewing with an overnight mash? Saves a hell of a lot of time. It works for me and makes me wonder who thought up the dubious liquor to grist ratio rules.
