"The Martian"

Searched for this and did not find a reference to “The Martian” by Andy Wier. Finished it last week, very good story of an astronaut stranded on Mars. Pretty good on the technical parts. Story is involved, and full of points in the plot where the Martian environment almost kills him. A good read.

It is being made into a movie, Matt Damon as the lead, Ridley Scott directs.

Awesome book. I loved the technical content and story.

I enjoyed reading it also.  I liked the McGuiver-like attitude.  It made me think of a lot of friends who are engineers.

Sounds like a good read.  Found the listing on librarything.com and added it to my wish list.  Thanks for the heads up.

I keep telling people - if you liked the part of Apollo 13 where the engineers had all the parts dumped on the table and had to figure out a solution to the air scrubber problem - this is the book for you.

I read it in two night time sessions. I lurved it.

You know I tried to love this book and thought it was simply too technically detailed to be an enjoyable novel. Page after page about the dirt and the potatoes.

Yeah, I fall somewhere in between those two opinions. I thoroughly enjoyed all the technobabble, but I would have liked to see a character developed. Just one would be fine.

One thing I should have said - I hope they don’t screw the movie up too bed. Mark Watney had a sense of humor that may be lost as in the movie trailer it looks like he has a wife and kid.

Towards the end of the book as the number of pages were low, I was saying what goes south now?  There was  plenty of room left for more disaster, drama, and technical improvising.

Great book.  Looking forward to the film.  The trailer looks amazing.

Just listened to the book on audio on a trip… really entertaining. I have a slight fascination with Mars and colonization and this delivers on both humor, science and drama. Just a really fun ride without getting too stupid and out of the box.

I’m about 50 pages in, not quite sure how I feel about it yet.

Are you a fan of Space X?

I am, and a contributor to an independent game on Mars colonization. Google HyperKat and Mars Colony. V2 is about to land… Art in the first is mediocre, better in the newer version. Best friend owns HyperKat Games.

Keep reading. Really, just read it.
