I purchased my Thermapen during last year’s “Open Box” sale. The box appeared to have never been opened, and the Thermapen appeared to have never been used.
I have no idea as to why Thermoworks runs these sales. All I remember when purchasing my Thermapen was thinking that it was the most ridiculous, money burning a hole in my pocket gear purchase that I had made up to that point.
I bought mine on sale a few years ago. It appeared to be “New in Box” as well. I do admit that spending $75-$80 on a thermometer seems a little outrageous, but I love the accuracy and the speed of the reading. I checked mine against a lab grade thermometer recently, and it was very close at every calibration point (>.5F).
Worth every cent IMO. My wife washed and dried mine that was in my bib pocket. Removed the batteries and made sure the interior was dry, installed them, and it took off like new. Checked calibration and it was like nothing ever happened to it. I use mine for cooking too.
It says it stabilizes in 5-6 seconds. For the price difference I think I’ll wait the couple of seconds over the thermopens 3 seconds. Also its dishwasher safe which tells me it can handle being dropped in a mash. Thanks!
I have and love the rtc as well. It was actually cheaper than the DeltaTrak NSF certified that is leftover from my restaurant days. I get essentially the same readings from both, but the rtc gets there and stabilizes much faster
I use this, primarily. The infrared was bonus…always within .5 degree of probe reading. Waterproof and reads really quick ( not quite as fast as thermopen)
I use this with great results. I got it for $3.99 shipped from a sale on Meritline years ago and it works great. It takes 6-8 seconds or so to equalize, and mine is calibrated just fine. Even at $8 it’s practically disposable. I’ve been meaning to pick up another one or two for dedicated food and cheese thermometers, so I don’t have to share my beer one.
