Thiolized Yeast for Hazy NEIPA

I did my starter for OYL-402 Omega Cosmic Punch last night - 150 G of DME for 1500 ML of distilled water. The starter has blown off 3 times on me since. This is the first time I’ve had a starter blow off. I even put a blow off tube leading to a container of sanitizer after the 2nd blow off and it still blew off a 3rd time (yeast n by-product all over the stir plate). I’m currently letting it decant so I can remove some of the used-up wort, but I’m a little worried now about using it because of all the …" less-vegetal-matter is best for thiolized yeast to do their thing". … talk. The recipe calls for little hop addition to the boil, but a bunch for the whirlpool. Then, 2 stages of dry-hopping. Nevertheless - a LOT of vegetal matter. i’m still buying recipe kits as I’m new to the game so no cryo hops or anything like that. I’m not sure I want to do a dip hop like some suggest. I have an extra bag of oyl-402 in the fridge along with Wyeast 1318 London III Ale Yeast. I heard blending both thiolized and non-thiolized yeast together might be a good thing. Should I just follow through with the recipe without any improvisation ? Is my starter still okay?

I thinkyour starter is fine, especially judging by the activity. Even if it did have some contact with the environment, the activity would be creating a lot of excess Co2 which will create a barrier for dust, etc. An extremely active pitch of yeast is going to out compete other microbes, and once the beer is finished fermenting it is fairly stable due to the lower pH and, epecialy in this case, the amount of hops which are antimicrobial.

I have no personal experience with blending thiolized strains but I use Cosmic Punch very regulalry and it gived me the exact flavor profile I seem. So I reommend just going wity the starter you have.

You are all good- don’t fall prey to the “I read this about this” worry. It’s not worth it until you verify stuff for yourself. Brew the kit as intended, take notes, and enjoy the result. It’ll be great because you brewed it. That simple.

Thanks. I went with that starter and it seems to be off to a great start! In fact, I have to figure out WHEN to do the first dry-hop. My plan was high krausen which seems to be real soon. I pitched yesterday around 5 pm. This morning it was well on its way with a krausen already climbing
