USPS Shipping Beer and Wine

Sounds like it probably won’t go anywhere, but according to the Washington Post, the proposed Postal Service Reform bill has a piece in it about legalizing the USPS shipping of beer and wine.

[quote]“I’m a wine connoisseur, but is allowing the Postal Service to ship beer and wine and closing small post offices while the organization is losing billions really the answer?” Burrus asked.

Uh… Yes?!

isn’t the AHA working with fedex to allow homebrewers to ship legally to comps?

Nope…we’ve tried the private carriers and there isn’t enough money in it for them to make it worth their while.  We are working on getting the federal law changed, though, so that it will be legal to use USPS.

Uh… Yes?!

That quote is just bizarre. “We’re hemorrhaging money… why would we look for new revenue streams while reducing expenditures?”

It’s legal now - just against UPS/FedEx rules. (Although in some states it’s illegal to transport alcohol across state lines, even if it’s homebrew.)

Without comment (don’t want to get deleted), another quote from that article is “William Burrus, president of the American Postal Workers Union, said”.
