Vienna Malt

Never used Vienna as a base malt. Thinking of doing a basic IPA with it. Mistake?

Do it. I would personally do all vienna or mainly vienna with maybe a pinch of crystal

A couple brewers here do it/have done it. I use plenty of Vienna but I haven’t made an all Vienna IPA. However one of the brewers here sent me his all Vienna IPA. It was very tasty. If you’re looking for a neutral malt base that shows off hop character and stays out of the way, this is not the route to go. But if you want a more balanced IPA that has a rich malt base with character, then this would work very nicely. If you’re after the latter, go for it!

Yep. Sounds good to me. Planning on us-05 that I have on hand.

Yummy.  You’ll love it.  I had a friend who tried that and it was amazing.

I made a Vienna-Amarillo SMaSH Pale Ale last year that was tasty. If you want an all Vienna beer to be hoppy, you really need to load up on bitterness. This one was more balanced and I liked that about it.

I did a Irish Red with Vienna as the base. It was pretty good.
If I do it again though I would probably cut it with some pale ale malt.

I make a very tatsy all vienna IPA and pale ale with mandarina hops. worth brewing one just to see for yourself.

You helped me formulate an APA that was almost entirely Vienna malt. I have been tinkering with different mixes of base malts but so far that has been my favorite. My current one is 70% pils 30% munich and next up is a mix of pils, vienna, and munich

My IPA is mostly best vienna malt

I made a Vienna - Centennial SMASH IPA last year because those were two ingredients I had too much of.  Turned out great.

I’m thinking of 7 lbs. Vienna, 3 lbs. flaked corn 1 lb. light munich.  Opinions?

That sounds fantastic.

Did a Vienna SMASH IPA with Amarillo, one of my better beers. My “house” IPA is Vienna base because of that experiment. Great malt for an IPA.
