Hey my brew friends im looking at finally getting a water filter after my few years of brewing to get me an even better finished product. My question is will this whirl pool one be fine and what micron filter should I get? Figured a higher micron can strip alot of crap out and I can build my water back up to the style of beer im brewing that day. Any help and insight would be awesome.
Eventually when I set the garage up as full home brewery I’m going to have a under sink ro set up for all my brewing water but for now just a filter will help get my beers alittle better
Well if you have chlorine you must be on a municipal supply, rather than a well. It should be fairly free of particulates, so the only filter you need would be the carbon filter for chlorine. The rest of your water chemistry – alkalinity, hardness – can’t be addressed with a filter. RO will take care of that, but only necessary if alkalinity is too high to deal with.
A particulate filter cannot remove any form on ionic content from water. To give you an idea of why this is so, the typical particulate filter can have a micron rating of 1 to 5. That means it will capture particles larger than either 1 or 5 microns. However, the minimum pore size for nanofiltration is about 5 nanometers (a micron is 1000 nanometers). The pore size for RO is about 10 times smaller than nanofiltration.
So don’t count on a particulate filter removing your water’s ionic content.
The only good thing that a particulate filter does is keep crap from clogging your carbon filter or RO filter. It otherwise is a worthless investment in brewing.
Maybe I’m looking at this wrong lol the filter I posted up top would that beable for me to swap in a carbon filter insert inside the canister or is that a totally different filter?
