I know that this filter uses 1/2" FPT fittings. I’d like to be able to hook up my hose(s) to it with some sort of SS or plastic QDC.
Any guidance on how best to do this? I suppose only one side of the filter would be hooked to my hose, the other could be any length of silicone tubing.
Thanks in advance, I am not keen in the fittings department!
Why? Fear of lead? Brass fittings are fine for water.
You can use stainless fittings. McMaster might have a stainless garden hose fitting, or you could use cam locks with barbs. Bargainingfittings.com has great prices on cam locks.
If you search “water hose quick connect” lots of options come up. Most are brass but some are plastic. Not sure if the plastic ones are safe for drinking water.
Yup, and I think that’s debatable. FWIW, there is a reason I use a marine hose (drinking water hose) like you mentioned over a garden hose. Even if those fittings on the water filter were lead-free, this only means it’s reduced to .25%. I realize the ethanol I’m drinking will most likely do more damage in the long run :o
I feed my brewery from a frostfree stand pipe using an RV hose. Unless you spend a ton they are about worthless. I’m replacing mine soon with reinforced vinyl tubing. Much more durable
+1. Justin, there was an excellent presentation on homebrewing toxicology at last year’s NHC. Put to rest whatever concerns I had. Here’s the link. The whole presentation is good, but the section about brass is addressed on pg 21:
BY FAR the biggest toxin we should be concerned about in brewing is the alcohol itself.
Your local hardware store will have PVC adapters to transition from NPT to garden hose. PVC (and CPVC) is the standard for home plumbing in most states now.
If the concern in Brass… Isn’t the spigot and hose connections Brass? Just thinking if there is a concern with the QD… those are good things to change out too.
Hi guys- i made this filter using a whole house filter, some pvc and a couple brass fittings. I hook up a garden hose to my utility sink, then run it to the qd attached to the filter. The ball valve gives me control at the kettle. The downspout on the output allows me to hang it on my kettle without having to hold it. Unfortunately i do not have an exploded pic of this one, but ive been happy with it since i have purified water on hand whenever i need it. Hope this helps.
It’s easy, cheap, and these type of filter are rated for both NSF/ANSI 42 and 53. Most of the cartridge type filters (10 inch for example) are only rated for 42. You want the 53!
