What is the most hops you have ever used in a batch?

I have a friend that loves very high IBU beers. So I decided to see to what end. I made a SMaSH with NW Pale Ale and Cascade.
The hops were year old back yard grown and fresh.
This is a 2.5g batch
1 oz 60 min
1 oz 30 min
1 oz 20 min
1 oz 10 min
2 oz flame out. This is an estimate as they where fresh just picked off the plant. I counted how many cones were in .25 oz and picked to match the count for the total. If I had thought about it, I would have weighed them out for my record.
Assuming 5.5AA Beersmith says it should have been about 110 IBU
To me it had a nice smell. And the first sip was good too. But I tell you that the finish was like a kick in the mouth.

So, what is the most you have ever used in a batch?

After several reliable sources here describing their hop schedule, my last IPA had 16oz in it. This included FWH, 60 miunte bittering, 10, 0, and dry hops. Beersmith calculated it at 160IBU in 5.5G of 1.074 wort. The FWH really did make the bitterness much smoother. Real easy drinking for what it was. I loved it and will definitely use this schedule often in the future for IPA!

Edit: this was 12oz in BK, plus 4 oz dry

I used 18 ounces in 5 gallons once. it was too much. I probably could have used them more effectively but I was still pretty green… and so was the beer.

14 oz has been the most I’ve used in a 5 gallon batch (Pliny clone).

The Pliny kit I made last year from extract also used 14oz

I am not much for extremely hoppy beers. Right now I have a lager that is on the hoppy side with half a pound for five gallons.

18 oz in IIPA.  I’ve made a lot of IPAs with a lb, but now with the heavy hop stand additions I’ve been doing, 14 oz total seems like the sweet spot.  I hop appropriately for my other beers, but I do love my IPAs on the hoppy side.

EDIT - Actually I’ve used a little over 20 oz in a IIPA.

Probably a Pliny clone, same rate as stated. Then when you do a Doppelbock and have about 1 oz. + a little, you keep looking at the container and checking your notes.

The most I’ve ever used is a pound in a 1-gallon batch. It’s over a year later, and I’m still waiting for all the hop debris that made it through from the boil to drop out in the fermenter so I can start the dry hops.

As far as an actual drinkable beer goes, I use 17 ounces in a 3-gallon batch of my house IPA. It is complete hop overload at that point, but that’s how I like it.

You made stew, not beer.

I use 24 oz in a Burton Ale that I make every year. Most of it at the beginning of the boil. There is usually a lb of EKG in it, and then another variety fills out the rest. The one I am currently drinking also had Glacier and Serebrianka in it. It is pretty tasty.

More like porridge, but you’re definitely in the right ballpark. The other time I did this using whole cones it was like boiled spinach. Yes, I did this twice.

33 oz in 12 gal of a RuinTen clone.

I typically use about 11oz in my house IPA (5.5 gallons), but the most ever for a 5.5 gallon batch was 14oz. I’d probably go more, but it tends to get expensive and I make a lot of IPA and APA… so I’ve got to balance my tastes with my wallet.

18.5 oz in a 5.5 gallon batch. I typically use a pound in my IPA’s.

Feeling wimpy. 6 ounces in a 5G IPA.

Don’t feel bad. My next IPA will get 5 not counting 4 more in dry hops.

You are a person of restraint in the land of ridiculousness.

14-16oz.

My six included dry hops. It was good beer. People loved it.

About 10 ounces in a 5 gallon batch.
