Got home today. Decided to have an IPA that I was really enjoying before I left. Wow, is that an abrasive and overpowering beer! One and done.
Need to get some nice lagers going now that it is a little cooler.

I’m craving some more lager beers on tap too. I brewed four ales recently which should keep me stocked up for a bit, perfect time to start some lager beers to age. That and I’ve been reading about Amanda and Jim tinkering with mash techniques combined with listening to lager podcasts and German brewing techniques, it just gets the lager bug going!

Funny thing, though. Sometimes I get back from a trip and my first homebrew is better than a lot of the beers I had during my traveling. Other times I think I have more work to do.
My exact thoughts as of late. I’m getting excited about making some German and Bo Pils during these winter months.
Hop dominated beers were not a thing in Germany. I did have an IPA made by Spital in Regensburg, and that was fairly balanced and drinkable. My point was that the palate can reset to less bitter and hop flavored beers. My reaction to my IPA was similar to when I had Ballantine IPA back in '74! It was a shock to the senses.
After spending two weeks in Germany, I had a Hop Hunter by SN at a work dinner. Was amazed at how good it tasted at the time. After two weeks I was tired to drinking so many great lagers. Now I wish I could have one.
That is why I grabbed the IPA!

Did you drink any kellerbier or Zwickelbier? One of my fav styles!

I just visited for my first time last fall, if you’re a first timer I would say you should definitely stop by the Hofbrauhaus in the city center. Very historic and awe inspiring, at least I found it to be. The beer aint bad either. Pick up a copy of the Beer Drinker’s Guide to Munich.
How long are you there? The longer the time frame, the longer the suggestions will be.

Hofbrauhaus as it is so famous, but it is full of tourists.
Any Augustineer place. The Grossgestat on the main pedestrian zone is another classic Bierhall. Might be too cold for the Keller.
I could go on for a long ramble on this, if i know the timeframe.

Get the Beerdrinkers Guide to Munich. The web site is helpful too.
There is the Ayinger am Platzl near the Hofbrauhaus.
Andechs am Dom, at the east end of the cathedral with the tall onion domed towers.
The Augustiner Keller does have some indoor seating. There is the Augustiner brewery too.
Löwenbrau Keller, near the brewery.
Schneider has a place on Tal. Also Haufbrau Tergensee has a place on Tal.
Paulaner has their Biergarten near the brewery.
Hirschgarten has some indoor seating and food.
There are a couple of places in the Englischer Garten, but I was always outside there.
The Viktual Market is worth going through on market days. There are a couple of places you can get beer there.
If you have time, you can get to Ayinger, Forschungsbrau, Andechs, and Weihenstephan by train. Any of those would use up most of a day.
