Quick question about whirlpool. Do you whirlpool before using the immersion chiller or after?
Considering I use a pump, I do during chilling and after chilling. Before I had a pump I would chill, pull the chiller and then whirlpool. The chilling will create more break that will benefit from the whirlpool.
ok thanks. I do not have a pump.
when adding hops at 175 degrees for an ipa, do you whirlpool then and then again after cooling?
If I didn’t have a pump, I would do this.
Chill, add hops, stir with chiller from time to time, chill to pitch temp (or as close as possible), pull chiller, stir for a solid 60 seconds with a sanitized spoon, rest for 20 minutes.
thanks. reassurance is appreciated
Yes, there are two types of whirlpool. A hops whirlpool (usually ~ 175->155) and a trub whirlpool. After the wort is cool, you pull the chiller and get the wort spinning in the pot (pump or brew spoon). When the circulation stops much of the trub will be concentrated in a low cone in the center of the pot.
thank you. when you do a hops whirlpool, do you pull out the other hops from your other additions or leave them all in
I leave them all in.
thanks for fast responses. first all grain brew tomorrow and on the new setup
Let us know how it goes, the first few batches are all about learning the ins and outs of your hardware and process, remember, it only gets easier after your first brew. Keep good notes, I think this site has some downloadable pdfs you can use.
Good luck. I’ll bet that you will be amazed at how good that first all-grain beer will taste. I still think my first AG beer was my best ever.
