So, I don’t drink wheat beers. I’ve got a really good friend who likes wheat beers and has financed several of my brewing expenses. So I’m making him a wheat beer. First off, do I need to mill it? Also, I’ve got some spare rice hulls lying around, should I through them into the mash so my runoff doesn’t get stuck? My system sticks real bad with oats, is wheat different?
Absolutely mill it.
I have used the white wheat a few times and yes I milled it (or had the LHBS mill it for me) I don’t have problems with stuck mashes (knock on wood) but I suppose it can’t hurt to ad some rice hulls I know wheat in general is considered a sticky adjunct.
I mill malted wheat so it breaks the kernel down for more surface area to be exposed increasing efficiency. I would definably use rice hulls if you are worried about a stuck mash. Why chance it?
Gotcha. Thanks for the quick reply, guys! Gonna brew this one tomorrow, probably.
