WY 1338 is Gone

I just heard from my LHBS that Wyeast 1338 European Ale yeast has been discontinued.  Looking at Wyeast’s website, it appears this is true.

This was my favorite yeast for malt focused ales.  I’m disappointed.  Are there suggestions for other low attenuating and malty flavor focused yeasts from Wyeast or White Labs?

1968 London ESB. This is what I use when I’m brewing a malt forward English Ale. The downside is it flocculates like crazy. Which is good for clear beer, but bad if you collect and rinse yeast, which I do.

Sorry for your loss, but having 1469 year round makes me a happy boy.

It would appear that WLP011 from White Labs is the same strain as WY1338.

If you liked 1338, you’ll like WLP011.  I really like it for malty beers like Brown Ales and Porters.  It can also make a decent Alt, if you account for it’s tendency to not end as dry as 1007.  It drops very nice and clear, making for a quick turn around without the need for cold conditioning to make the beer bright.

That was my go-to yeast for Bieres de Garde…I’ll have to give WLP011 a try.

I’ve used WLP 011.  I can’t say that they are the same.  There was a difference by my palate when brewing the same beer.  I preferred the 1338, but the 011 might just have to do.

The problem is that my LHBS doesn’t stock 011.  I suppose that now that 1338 isn’t available, they will need to stock this one.

Perhaps the Scottish Ale yeast?

Ive used both in Scottish Ales and experienced similar results.

Yeah I like 1728 for malty ales too.

Thanks for the heads up. Just did 15 gallons of Irish Red with it. One guy didn’t show up so I can still ranch some up for storage!
