I’m brewing (lord willing) a ~2 gallon pale ale batch this weekend and will be using (2) 1 gallon glass fermenters. I recently picked up some S-05 and WLP 001. I could easily use one of these and split it but figured it might be fun to use half of each per gallon. Thoughts?
I like doing splits like that, but I usually use two yeasts that are a bit less similar.
It will be interesting for you to see the differences between two yeasts of the same origin. I’m certain they will be different, whether its subtle or not I have no idea.
+1. Differences will be subtle. IMO S-05 is a little more powdery (less flocculant and a little slower to clear) , but will clear out in time and make a good beer.
I would pitch all of one or pickup another strain. Save the US-05 for later as it stores longer. I always have a few packs of US-05 and S-04 in the fridge for back-ups. Maybe I’ll pickup some belle and Nottingham too.
Side by side is how I confirmed my distaste for Nottingham.
