2-Row Bulk (Ordering and Storing)

I’m curious who buys their 2-Row in bulk here? If you do, how is it shipped to you? Is it in some packaging or does just the sack show up?

Secondly, how are you storing your 2-Row?

I’m picking up an order this Friday that a local homebrew club did.  They get enough interest that they can order pallets of grain, making the price and shipping a lot less.  Otherwise I’ll buy a sack of grain from the local homebrew shop.  Ordering online and shipping is usually too much $.

I store my grain in a 50 lb Vittle Vault.

Yep, unless it is your only option.

+1 - If you wait for sales, then you can often get it for a decent price. The other advantage is that if you shop around you can often get whichever specific brand you are looking for.

yep I buy base malts in bulk-i keep 55# sacks in mettle trash cans in cool dry basement. my LHBS runs sales, and when they do i pull the trigger on them. right now i have 55# each of avangard pils, pale ale, light munich, and muntons maris otter.

OK pulled the trigger on my first “sack”, after shipping it was 1.24 a pound. Also have a Vittles Vault coming! Thanks everyone.

If you can ask around at a local, you may find a great deal. My Avangard pils was $0.72/lb after tax, picked up locally. I also picked up Rahr 2 row at a different shop for $0.86/lb. Like Ken, I am sitting on partial sacks of Weyerman Munich I&II, Avangard Pils, Rahr 2 Row, and Crisp Maris Otter ($1.02/lb) I am very happy with these prices, but with all of them, I had to pre-pay/pre-order from the locals, just forced me to plan a little farther out than I usualy do, not a bad thing at all. Shop around locally, find an LHBS that you like and want to support. If no LHBS, and I think I remember you saying that before, wait for great sales+free/cheap shipping from online retailers. i also use the 50&60# vittles vaults, just find a place where you can store them and measure out from there, because they are oddly shaped and tough to move around when they have 50# of grin in them. Good luck

I am using 65-quart wheeled pet food containers for my bulk malts.  They easily hold 50 to 55 pounds of malt, and are easy to move around.

Check your local box store. I found Gamma-Seal lids for 5 gallon pails. Same lid as Vittle Vault but 1/3 the cost for a food grade bucket and lid.

Thanks Mark. those look good. I have smaller versions, that do not come close to holding a full sack. If I ever feel the need to go beyond the 5 vaults I have now for more base malt storage, I will look at these more closely

They work great for dry dog food too!

just dont mash your dog food  ::slight_smile:

The ones that were too small for full sacks, have already been re-purposed for dog food and they work great for that

I like 5 gallon buckets with Gamma lids (same as the Vittles Vault). Each holds ~25,and the bail handle is much easier to grab compared to the molded handles of the Vittles Vault.

I have been guilty of having a senior moment or two.

Pedigree Pale Ale…mmmmmm kind of meaty

I hope everyone here has full sacks, just sayin, lol.  Sorry, couldn’t resist the opportunity…

Look what the stork dropped off! Fits perfectly in the Vittles Vault. What’s the secret with cutting these sacks open? Ended up with a few plastic pieces (inner bag) in my grain that I’ll worry about drinking for the next 55 lbs. Am I crazy to worry about this?

I try to unfurl the string, but each brand of malt seems to have a different arrangement.  I found this with a quick search:

I haven’t looked at Jeff’s link, but here is another.
