Hi everyone, I am looking at buying grain in 55# bag form. Upon looking, it seems like Rahr 2-row is significantly cheaper than other base malts. Can anyone tell me if my beer will suffer if I buy the Rahr 2-row? I really don’t know the difference between different 2-row pale malts. For instance, what is the difference between Rahr 2-row and Marris Otter?
Here’s a recent thread: http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/forum/index.php?topic=845.0
Thanks! Great thread!
If anybody wants to try some 2 row malt grown in Michigan later this year, a friend may be putting some in and set aside a portion of it for malting. If it turns out he’ll offer it at a good price for homebrewers. We’re looking into drying / malting equipment and whatnot. He’s got fan mills, roller mills and god knows what else in his managerie of equipment already. Can anybody point me to a site, pdf file or anything that explains kilning temperatures and time for pale malt? I’ll be the first to try the malt and I’ll post what comes of it either way. He knows he can’t ask prices like larger malting companies get since it will be a one-off type thing, if it works out well he may do it again next year etc.

there is a book i think titled “the homebrewer’s garden” and it has a section on malting and converting malts to different colors flavors etc. it is a fun read.
