I went to a bottle share this last weekend and someone brought this!! It was truly amazing, it was a huge beer! I love barrel aged beers but never had one quit like this.
I bet it was an amazing beer. I’m sure I will never try a dark lord beer due to cost, demand and effort needed to get one.
I was able to have a Zombie dust, hopped in half and gum ball head tonight though.
Their big beers get well deserved praise but I really wish I could just get some Alpha King or Gumballhead here. Their East coast expansion 10 years ago lasted about a month before they pulled back. I do hoard dreadnaught whenever I have to pass through Indiana.

I couldn’t even get any Zombie Dust or GumballHead to bring home with me when I was in Chicago last summer. We stopped at the 3 Floyds Brewery and even a few spots in Munster, IN and they didn’t have any available for purchase in bottles. The brewery only had a couple of things available. Robert the Bruce was one of them.
I can occasionally find a place here in Columbus that has them on draft. Mostly it is Alpha King that is available but the others can be found every once in a while.
I live in Milwaukee, we get very little 3 Floyds. If we do get any Zombie Dust the store usually does a 2 bottle limit and it’s still sold out in an hour!
The regular Dark Lord is a good beer but I don’t know that I would pay the price for it. It’s intensely sweet (I think the FG is like 1.030) which is generally not my preference.
I haven’t had the regular Darklord yet, it’s always long gone before I can get any!
I have seen so many posts on a FB group lately about all the crazy bottle releases of limited edition stuff. I have not waited in any lines, bought any special passes, or bartered my way any into any of the big whales and really dont plan on it anytime soon. There seem to be a ton of them that i would likely be very happy with, maybe some day… On the other hand, the limited number of brews from 3Floyds I have had were all wonderful: Gumbalhead, Yum Yum, Alpha Klaus, Alpha King, Zombie Dust, and Robert the Bruce, Moloko, Calumet Queen. Wait, I guess not so limited in variety, just limited in availability
I’ve spent to much time trying to get limited release beers!!! That’s what motivated me to try home brewing. Im tired of spending that much time and expense for a few beers that are great but still gone in a blink.
I like that thought but how easy is it as a home brewer to obtain recipes for those you have never tried?
I totally agree, but once you know the flavor profile your looking for than you can challenge yourself to try and make it and I like a good challenge!! Plus some of these hard to get beers your lucky to get 1 bottle and if I can make something even remotely close and get 2 cases in my mind I won.
I understand that, my question was mainly when you have not even tasted it. But I like a challenge as well. Just bottled up my third attempt at something like a local brew, and I’m getting awfully close
I agree. Though I’ve brewed a few good ‘clone’ recipes before, I actually enjoy more trying to figure it out myself with known ingredients that many breweries publish on their site. I like the idea of trying to get close to a beer but making it my own.
I’m a big fan of bourbon barrel aged beers, I have a stout and a scotch ale sitting right now. They keep getting better.
Guess I’m one of the lucky ones - I live about 3 miles from 3 Floyd’s, and have tried a whole variety of their beers including various Dark Lords. Food is good too. Zombie Dust is regularly on tap, but there’s usually a sign on the take out door, “No Zombie Dust.” Dark Lord Day creates a huge traffic jam. Soon they’ll be opening a big distillery next door to the brewery. As Billy Currington says, “God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy.”
Oh a 2012 was my first exp.to dark lords day, and this year with 200$ per person with 4 bottles of dark lord imperial stout, and 1 bottle of dark lord variant, I was SUPER unlucky, my sister is getting married on the 30th. And she is the reason I can’t go, and I will remind her for the rest of her life! Even living in Indiana that is steep though. I struggle to find 3 floyds anywhere in a bottle. I have not seen a 6pack in stock on a shelf of gumball head, zombie dust, or Yum Yum in a year. If I want it, I have to ask a friend at party pak to order some up and hold them for me. They fly off of any shelf they get set on. Oh to home brew as well as 3 Floyds…
$200 for 5 bottles is a lot of money for any beer!!!
It is but it helps that the ticket included a food/drink credit for the event. Still, those beers are not cheap.
I’m in Mishawaka Indiana for work right now. Both places I went to for dinner so far had Zombie dust on tap. They also had many others 3F beers. I also went to a bottle shop last night and picked up a sixer of gumball head and alpha King to take home.
Food and drink for the event helps, otherwise it’s $40 a bottle.
