Aeration for big beer

Hi all,
I brewed a wee heavy yesterday that had an OG of 1.095. I used a tube of WLP001 and a tube of WLP028. I pitched a 1.7 liter starter and aerated with pure O2 for 90 seconds. The lag time was about 8 hours and it was blowing off at about 12. I’ve read that some are adding a second dose of O2 at 12-18 hours on bigger beers. With the active vigorous fermentation, is the extra O2 necessary and am I just opening myself up for risk of contamination?

I don’t generally add any extra O2 on big beers after the initial oxygenation, though you can do that at that point. Pitching enough active yeast and oxygenating well gives me good results, though an 1.100+ beer might be a beer that benefits from the extra oxygenation.

I don’t add extra O2, but I do pitch a lot more yeast than you did.

I may be ok, one bit of info I forgot to mention is that this is a 2.5 gallon batch.

Yeah, that makes a difference!

Yeah… my bad… This is what happens when I post on Sunday morning before my coffee.

Yeah, I think you’re good!

I immediately thought the same thing = underpitch!!

Glad it was only for a 2.5 g batch… 8)

For my yearly big RIS (this years OG was 1.096), I oxygenate with O2 for 90sec and then a second time for another 60sec about 8-12hrs later. With a big starter, hit my FG of 1.013 (woah!) within 5 days. Completely ripped through… Yeast was 1056.
