I know there is probably not a very good direct sub for amarillo. I usually see cascade and centennial as possible subs. Any thoughts on a mix of hops that might come close?
I think Centennial and Ahtanum are fairly close. Cascade is in the ballpark as well. You could blend all 3 - they play well together.
Sounds like a good idea. I would like to try ahtanum but they may be harder to come by than I like. Maybe I will try a cascade/centennial split which I have plenty of right now.
The Apollo I got from yvhops.com this year had a lot of that orange-citrus note that I get from Amarillo, but with some dank as well. I’d consider blending in some Cascade with it to get more of the flowery note I pick up from Amarillo as well. Maybe 2:1 of Apollo to Cascade.
Cents would be a decent 1:1 sub, but I get more lemon than orange from them.
Is there a reason why your not using Amarillo?
I am using them now but am running out. I am more curious than anything. I am a pretty cheap brewer and saw that the prices increased substantially recently. I have never been able to get citra or simcoe for cheaper which I can now and I don’t spring for those often. Amarillo is prevalent in many of my beers so I could probably work around it. Know a good place to get Amarillo pellets?
Ok… That it was because of availability. I still have two pounds from last season so I didn’t buy any this year. I am seeing that most places are selling them for $25 plus a pound. I think I got them for $18-$20 last year. I try and by locally based on shipping. I usually get my hops from either of these three places…

The first two deal hop union bags. The hops shack has hop union bags, but he often repackages his hops since he deals large quantities. He’s currently out of Amarillo but will probably get more. He has the best prices I’ve seen.
