I tried them last year as a potential sub for amarillo - they did not have enough citrus character for what I was trying to do with them. Not sure what I would recommend them for, if anything.
Stone uses them… possible subs? maybe chinook and simcoe?
definitely nothing at all like simcoe. Not like chinook either.
Sub for Cascade and Amarillo
Yep, that’s what I was hoping for. They made a poor substitute though. I tried a single hop beer with them as well and just didn’t have the “punch” that cascade and especially amarillo have. Quite frankly I didn’t care much for them. I think I still have half of an 11 pound bag.
Are you talking aroma and flavor? Possibly from low beta acid content?
I would describe them as somewhere between a “C” hop and a “Goldings-type” hop. I think a fair sub would be 3 parts cascade and one part Styrian Goldings. They are pleasant in pale ales (where Stone uses them) and I imagine they would be nice in an Amber or Brown ale.
I used a bunch in an IPA and enjoyed them very much. I see them as a mix of cascade & williamette, leaning more on the williamette side. I’m a big fan of williamette, so I dig these hops
