Morning,
I was wondering if anyone has any experience using anise in homebrew recipes?
I am planning out a holiday stout recipe and I am thinking of using anise, along with some other spices, for my recipe.
I just want to some examples of recipes that work with it or tips on controlling the flavor.
Thanks.
One star anise/5 gallons did the trick in a Baltic Porter. Don’t overdo it.

Thanks for the info, but to clarify I am talking about anise or aniseed, not star of anise.

I know the flavors of both are similar but just want to make sure we are talking about the same spice ;D

Sorry, conflated anise to star anise. No experience with anise/anise seeds.
Same premise with any anise-flavored spice: go easy on the addition. I’d use the low end of star anise suggestions. If it isn’t enough you can always add more but you can’t take it away.

I made a spiced holiday ale a couple years ago and made a tea of the spices and added the tea to secondary. The tea was only about two cups.
