i have not been to these kind of tropical places. has anyone here ever tasted palm wine?
I got some Palm Wine from an African grocery in Oklahoma City. It tasted kind of like a vaguely coconut-y sugar wash. The flavor was inoffensive but the nose was a little unpleasant. I’m guessing palm sap is high-sugar and low-nutrient leading to a comparatively stressful fermentation … but that’s pure conjecture on my part.
Edit: I say the nose was unpleasant, but it’s probably kind of like that touch of sulfur in some lagers or that hint of light-struck in some green-glass Belgian beers: some people hate it; others find it an essential element of the style.
Edit edit: I’m about 90% sure it was Nkulenu Palm Drink.
thank you. i think “enu” from your nkul enu link means palm wine.
lol, reminds me i had tangerine wine on an island famous for tangerines once. it was $2, but definitely tasted like toothpaste. barely drinkable, jsut a novelty.
