A friend gave me two bottles of Kindl Berliner Weisse. She said she likes Grenadine with hers, but I’m wondering what other choices there are.
Best straight up for me.
I didn’t know that was still available anywhere.
You can probably try any liqueur you like. Maybe Chambord or Creme De Cassis.
traditional is sweet woodfruff (sp?) syrup.
I have made blueberry syrup, raspberry syrup and blackberry syrup for adding to Russian River wild beer and they were all lovely. grenadine sounds nice though.
I’m a big fan of the woodruff syrup.
I’ve not looked very hard but I havn’t had much luck in finding it. do you have a source?
Check your local German market. I found a bottle for a friend at one recently.

I’ve had homemade woodruff syrup made with woodruff from the homebrew shop. The color is off - brown instead of neon green, probably due to commercial syrups using food coloring - but people who’ve had it in Germany say the flavor is good. It’s pretty much simple syrup infused with dried woodruff. I thought it tasted good.
Liquor stores have all sorts of fruit-flavored syrups for cocktails now.

Nope. The only times I’ve had it it was provided by the people who made the beer.

Our local German deli/restaurant/craft beer bar keeps Waldmeister in stock.
I think I’ve also seen it at the local homebrew store.

To the OP: where did they find that beer? I used to really like it, but it’s been years since I’ve seen it.
Edited to add a link

I like the woodruff syrup from German Deli. It has an interesting herbal flavor I can’t describe.
And roughly how much of this is added to a half liter of Berliner Weisse? I am sure you sample to taste, but what have you found with it to your taste?

I cover the bottom of the glass with the woodruff syrup and then pour in the beer. A wild ass guess is 1 part woodruff to ~20 parts beer.

My preference is to pour the woodruff syrup down the drain, then enjoy the tasty berliner weisse.

My friend’s father-in-law lives in Rostock, Germany. I have invited him to my house many times for beer tastings, in which he pays me back by bringing me German beers that are not available where I live.

Woodruff is OK, but I prefer homemade raspberry syrup. I have to drive 50 miles to get woodruff syrup or order it online. This is what I get.

Very nice. I wish I had some.
Berliner Kindl Weiss is being imported into the US again or another German brand. I saw it at a Binnys in Chicagoland.
