Bohemian Pilsner Hop Schedule

What kind of hop schedule do you like for your Bo Pils? I’ve been going with 60, 15, 5 with about 38-40 IBU. My bitterness seems good but I’m lacking flavor and aroma, probably need to up those later additions some or change the times?

Two words: hop burst.

Throw in 100% of your hops in the last 10-15 minutes of the boil.  This should give you all the flavor and aroma you want with little dicking around with timing.

Can you get a good hop bitterness with 15 minute additions?

My first one is sitting in the fermentor now so I really can’t judge it yet - but I targeted 34ibus for a 1.045 brew. All Saaz split between 90m + 10m… intended to chop up the 90m as ½ FWH but forgot on brewday.

I don’t know about hop bursting, it would take a lot of Saaz hops to get the BTU’s up into range and wouldn’t that make the flavor and aroma overpower the malt?

My last one I went with enough Magnum at 60 to get 35 IBU then added 1/4 oz of Saaz at 15 and 5. This was for a 3 gal batch. Thinking of cutting down the the 60 addition and upping the later additions to 1/3 oz each.

I’ve also done a little research on PIlsner Urquell and it looks like they’re late addition is around 20-25 min but they FWH as well? It seems like they would have a later addition to get that wonderful flavor and aroma.

I use all saaz in mine, but they are really low alpha, so it takes a lot.  I use first wort hopping and a lot of late (ten minutes or less) hopping.

Use sterlings for the first part of the burst and saaz at the very end.

I like a lot of Saaz for FWH and at knockout.

I use Clusters to bitter.

Anyone ever try the Pilsner Urquell hop schedule, FWH, 80, 25? Seems like a weird schedule that wouldn’t give much flavor and aroma?

I usually FWH my pilsners and then add at 1 minute and then flame out.  I got this idea from a gold medal NHC recipe years ago.  It always turns out awesome.

My 2nd place BoPils in the NYC PU Comp a few years ago was all Saaz 16 IBU FWH, 20 IBU 60 min., 14 IBU 20 min., 1 IBU flameout. Vaclav liked it. Cheers to Phil who won the comp!

Nice, congrats, do they still hold those comps?

He also liked mine, placed second at the Chicago PU comp.  It was also all Saaz with most of the bu’s as first wort addition.
