Books

I’ve read “How to brew” and “the complete joy” I’m a bit of a book worm and am interested in getting into lagering, looking for some suggestions for some informative reading material.

At the risk of being self serving, 'Experimental Brewing", “Homebrew All Stars”, and “Simple Homebrewing”.

Self promote all you want as far as I’m concerned!

When I go to the LHBS I hear lots of questions and such that could be simply answered by reading a little, It seems to me if you wanted to get into a hobby or something like brewing people would read a little. I’m all about putting in effort and helping others but You can’t teach someone how to brew beer in a 3 minute conversation. Knowledge is power

Denny and Drew’s books are great and very readable. If you want to focus on lagers, Dave Carpenter put out a book a few years back:

I’d say read as much as you can, if that is your favored mode of learning, but ultimately brew as often as you can (smaller batches allow for frequent brewing)!  Cheers!

Denny and Drew’s books and Dave’s were some of the few I saved when I had to massively downsize a few years ago.

I like Brewing Classic Styles.  It doesn’t have the newest styles, but it has recipes and explanations of many styles.

For more advanced and detailed reading the Brewing Elements series features a book each on Malt, Hops, Yeast and Water. Available through Brewers Publications as well as from most major book sellers.

A couple of those are pretty good.

I just ordered that be here in a few days, thanks for the information everyone

not a book suggestion, but I’ve found that joining a homebrew club is one of the best ways to learn and improve as a brewer.

As soon as covid crap is over with all LHB clubs functions have been postponed

They’re not doing anything online? That sucks

Not at the moment, I approached the club that is ran at my LHBS, it’s not really my “local” store as it’s over an hour away. I prefer that place over the one that’s 20 minutes away lol. They are hoping to start having meetings and such again in the spring

This was my experience too.

Definitely can’t way to get around some home brewers as it’s just me and the cats in the basement while the girlfriend watches football!!!

For one thing, I didn’t know that Denny is Denny! Damn, that’s cool! Big props. Going to order Experimental Brewing to celebrate.

I really like Designing Great Beers and feel like it digs deep in a couple of ways most books don’t. I just ordered Brew Like a Monk. Like you, I’ve read most of the beginner books, and I’m trying to get into the next tier.

Looking forward to more suggestions.

So much information out there. I’m torn between trying to make a lambic, I have the time and space or brewing an old ale and serving it out of a barrel!
