Any metallurgist out there that can tell me what this means for my brew pot?
Quick note: just switched to propane after three yrs of glass top stove brewing. Have always used oxiclean versatile for cleaning and haven’t seen this before. Is the peroxide in the oxiclean damaging the stainless? I just got my new Ss brewtech kettle and if the oxiclean is the problem I will fork over the cash for PBW.
To be clear, you’re talking about the greenish/orange/purplish color that is caused by heat? I know the black marks are from scorched wort. Kinda worried me that my pot was turning into a double rainbow.
For accumulated beer stone - or whatever the precipitate is that forms on the bottom over time on my boil kettle, I do an extended soak with an alkaline product. I like Craftmeister best, because it works regardless of temperature, but other products will work, too. The stainless comes back shiny like new as long as I soak it long enough or mix it strongly enough in the solution applied. A small volume will clean a large container, if you scrub it down and let it set, then rinse and wipe off. Or you can use a lot of cleanser and do a full volume soak (rarely do I go that route).
I don’t get too worked up anymore when I see some discoloration/patina on the equipment. It just means it is getting used - unlike some guys I know that have to see that shine in all of their stainless items.
