Brewing a Kviek Mead

I am thinking of trying a 1 gallon batch of mead on an upcoming camping trip. As it will be hot and I want to drink this before the end of the trip, I figured this would be a good chance to try a kviek.
My thought process is boil some water & herbs/ spices add that to the honey, pitch the yeast and let the kviek work its magic, hope for the best then drink three or four days later.

  • has anybody tried and or made a kviek mead before?
  • Does this sound completely crazy or like it may produce a drinkable beverage?
  • Would you trust a “brand new” packet of White Labs Pure Pitch that has been in my fridge to work, or should i get a new thing of kviek?

Thanks for any tips or insights!

Yes. I’ve used kveik yeast to make mead.

You’ll want to add yeast nutrient since honey is nutrient deficient compared to wort. Read up on staggered nutrient additions for mead. You could taste it at three days, but I suspect it’ll take longer to taste proper.

Do you have reason to mistrust the White Labs pack? Is it expired or anything?

I brewed a few kviek meads last summer. They were great. They were hydromels around 5% and ready to drink in maybe 2 weeks with staggered nutrients additions and clarified with keisesol and chitosan. I can’t imagine this would be good in 3 or 4 days. FYI even though I brewed in the summer I still used a heat pad and controller to get it hot enough for kviek.
Also, personal opinion, camping is enough of a PITA to prepare for without adding mead making to all the preperation.
