Thought i would post amazon has a deal for prime members 10LBS of "Briess for 6.71 shipped. Heck of a deal if you are not fussy on your brand of 2 row.
This is a pretty solid deal… I’m just weary on the freshness. I don’t get too bent out of shape over malt freshness. I usually buy a couple hundred pounds of base malt at a time when I find it on sale. This usually lasts me the year. I just wonder if this has been sitting around in a warehouse for a couple of years. You’ll have to let us know!
I’ve never had Melba toast but I imagine the analogy is that briess brewers malt is like stale toast compared to fresh toasted bread. I’ve used plenty of rahr, malteurop, and briess to know that they are interchangeable in recipes that call for a (virtually) flavorless base malt. IMO, of course.
Yeah, the deal posted in the original post (I think I got it at $6.73/10lb), only I was expecting Briess and it turned out to be GW. I’ve used GW Northwest Pale Ale malt in an APA once and it was fine - nothing too memorable but I probably should have used it in something closer to an ESB for a more prominent malt presence.
I’m interested in finding out if anyone/everyone else got GW or if some folks really got Briess. Doesn’t matter to me much; just curious is all.
I use the analogy because Briess is the most boring and bland domestic 2-row that I have used to date. GW is what the big West Coast brewers use when they use American 2-row.
IMO, GW and Rahr are the two best domestic malts. I have never found Briess to have much flavor. I understand things have changed there,so it may be better now. But I’m happy with GW and Rahr and have noreason to try Briess again.
