Brewing my Brass Knuckles IPA today. Should call is Brass Monkey. Its 13° out. Good test for my yoga mat MT cozy. After 40 minutes it’s only lost 2°, but I started 2° high so all good.
Ground water is 43° so my IC ought to work well lol
Brrrrrr! Yep, gonna be a chilly brew this weekend. I may break down and get a little heater for the garage.
Any recommendations?
Anybody ever use those dish type models?
we had a couple of the dish type at a PC clone company I worked at. They only heat things with moisture in them, not air so you have to stay in front of them to stay warm. They worked well but they aren’t “space” heaters but do work well to warm people.
My solution to those really cold brew days is a walk-out basement workshop and remote BBQ Smoker thermometer. I work inside while the burners sit outside. ;D
I’m surviving so far. This is my first batch since my Ward Lab results and all the great intel I’ve gotten from you guys. Mash and sparge pH were right on the money. I did however over estimate the dead space in my new 60 qt MT, and probably over estimated my absorption, cuz I had a gallon extra second running. All good, I’ll just do a boil down and add it before my late additions.
Let us know how the new system works out! Myself, no brewing but I’m bottling a dubbel from a keg, kegging a gingerbread stout, adding the bourbon soaked oak to half an imperial stout and bottling the chocolate raspberry port wine…all done inside as it’s low single digits here in the Denver area.
I’ll be brewing in my kitchen on Saturday with complete control over the temperature. I shall postpone christening the new pot and burner until warmer weather.
As far as garage heaters, I’ve never found anything electric to be effective and I never want to run the propane heater as then I need to vent the garage and let the cold in. Of course, my garage is detached, 100 years old, uninsulated and when I’ve needed to heat it I have been laying on the slab working under a car. You can blow hot air under the car, but you’d have to do so for a loooooong time to warm up all that cold steel.
It’s 24F out and sleeting so I’m not going to the office. It’s a good day to brew the annual refill for my lambic solera. I can do the long turbid mash inside in the kitchen but I’ll have to trek out to the detatched garage to run the turkey fryer. I’ll open the bay door and sit in my car with some coffee and work. Or maybe I will build a snow assistant brewer.
